In today’s world, modern logistics must offer more than just reliability and efficiency. The issue of sustainability is steadily gaining traction as a driving force behind the development of more environmentally friendly and future-proof logistics solutions.
Here in Linz, we are committed to a sustainable trimodal approach to logistics with direct connections to road, rail and river. This clever network of different modes of transport is key to flexible solutions to transportation and to significantly reducing emissions throughout the entire supply chain.
Our ILG Innovative Logistics Group Head Office is located in Logistikpark HAFEN LINZ, the largest port along the upper Danube. This strategically chosen location offers unparalleled trimodal infrastructure which is directly connected by:
🚢 river I 🚛 road I🚆 rail
This combination of different modes of transport allows for maximum flexibility while simultaneously optimizing how resources are used. This enables us to streamline transportation processes, shorten routes and reduce CO₂ emissions – all in line with a modern, responsible approach to logistics. As well as e-charging stations for land vehicles, LINZ AG Hafen is also equipped with shore-side electricity for barges – another significant step towards reducing emissions throughout the supply chain.
The introduction of shore-side power in the port is a clear sign of progress within shipping: reduced emissions, improved air quality – all a result of a more efficient and cleaner energy supply.
With eight operational shore-side charging stations in the port of Linz, at least 22 barges can be supplied with an emission free source of power at the same time. Consequently, diesel generators are no longer necessary on-board – leading to significant reductions in noise pollution and harmful emissions.
The way we combine different modes of transport demonstrates how we strategically and responsibly leverage existing infrastructure to deliver goods with maximum reliability and resource efficiency.
Road, rail, and waterways are seamlessly integrated into our holistic logistics concept, each contributing its unique advantages – from flexibility and speed, to energy efficiency and high capacity. At the same time, we address the specific challenges of each mode with a strong focus on environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability.
The diagram illustrates the modal split within our operations, showcasing how we make optimal use of the logistics ecosystem at the Port of Linz. The result: efficient, future-proof transport solutions that create value for our customers while conserving resources.
At 65 %, ocean freight is our largest logistical outlet. It is especially energy efficient with large quantities and over long distances. Through the strategic use of modern shipping technologies and cleverly calculated routes we are contributing in no small measure to an eco-friendly supply chain on an international scale.
Road transport accounts for 10 % of our transportation split and is used to cover so much more than just the “last Mile”. Be it over short or long distances, it offers the flexibility that so many of our customers value. As we turn increasingly towards e-vehicles, we are actively reducing CO₂-emissions as well as noise pollution.
At 25 %, rail transportation is the most environmentally friendly tool in our logistical arsenal. We rely heavily on rail in the hinterlands surrounding seaports – over 100.000 TEU are moved annually using this low emission mode of transport. E-trains offer enormous potential going forward.
The Danube stands as testament to what can be achieved in environmentally friendly transportation: The majority of our cargo makes its way from LINZ AG Hafen via barges or trains to large maritime ports and from there onward around the world – efficiently, economically and with a marked reduction in emissions. We are leverageing our proximity to the water to bring sustainable logistics solutions to the world.
