International industrial projects place the highest demands on logistics planning, coordination, and execution. For a major greenfield industrial project in the United States, a complex project cargo supply chain had to be established to transport approximately 35,000 freight tons of industrial equipment from multiple manufacturing locations across Europe. Precise planning, extensive project logistics expertise, and a strong international network formed the foundation for a successful and reliable project execution.
Large-scale industrial projects require logistics solutions that go far beyond conventional freight forwarding. When oversized and heavy-lift cargo must be transported across continents from multiple production sites, precise planning, technical expertise, and seamless coordination are critical to maintaining project schedules and ensuring on-time delivery.
This was exactly the challenge presented by a project for an Austrian industrial furnace manufacturer. Approximately 35,000 freight tons of industrial components had to be transported across the Atlantic to support a greenfield industrial project in the United States.
The cargo included oversized components with widths exceeding four meters and individual unit weights of more than 50 tons. Manufactured at several production facilities in Austria and across Europe, the components had to be integrated into a coordinated intercontinental transport chain and delivered according to predefined construction and installation sequences at the project site.
As part of a competitive tender process, ILG developed a comprehensive project logistics solution tailored to the specific requirements of the project. While transportation costs were an important factor, key evaluation criteria included sailing frequency, transit times, cargo security, operational reliability, and proven experience in managing complex international project cargo movements.
Ultimately, the contract was awarded based on ILG’s combination of technical expertise, operational excellence, and a robust global partner network. One of the project’s key success factors was the intensive preparation undertaken during the early planning phase. Transportation routes were analyzed in detail, route surveys were conducted, and potential risks throughout the supply chain were identified and mitigated before execution.
At the same time, a thorough understanding of the cargo itself played a critical role. The furnace components varied significantly in dimensions, weight distribution, lifting requirements, and handling characteristics. Based on these specifications, suitable transportation equipment, lifting concepts, and cargo securing solutions were developed to ensure safe and efficient handling throughout the logistics chain.
This detailed preparation ensured that all stakeholders involved in the transport process were fully aligned and able to handle the sensitive project cargo safely and efficiently at every stage.
The inland transportation from production facilities in Austria and other European countries to the export ports was carried out using specialized heavy-haul trucks and inland waterways, depending on the dimensions and weight of the individual cargo units.
For the transatlantic leg, RoRo vessels were primarily utilized, with approximately 80 percent of shipments routed through Hamburg and 20 percent through Bremerhaven, serving multiple ports across the United States.
This integrated multimodal transportation strategy provided the flexibility, reliability, and capacity required to maintain a stable project supply chain from the manufacturing sites in Europe to the final construction site in the USA.
A key element of the project execution was the hands-on involvement of the ILG project team throughout the entire transportation process. During vessel arrivals at both European and US ports, ILG specialists were present on-site to oversee cargo handling operations, conduct condition surveys, and verify cargo integrity.
By monitoring the cargo at both origin and destination ports, the team ensured complete visibility throughout the supply chain and enabled immediate response to any operational challenges.
Despite its complexity, the project was executed successfully. The combination of proactive planning, technical expertise, and international coordination ensured a stable and reliable transport chain throughout the entire project lifecycle.
All components were delivered to the construction site without damage and in accordance with the project schedule. At the same time, the project remained fully within the agreed budget framework, with no additional costs incurred by the customer.
The successful outcome demonstrates that international project logistics requires far more than the execution of individual shipments. Precise planning, in-depth cargo expertise, and a strong international network are essential for managing complex supply chains and ensuring reliable project delivery.
